The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Reveal a Fresh Divinity, Calling it Their Biggest RPG Yet

The buzz around the recent awards show has been intense, notably after host Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling photo of a strange statue. The mystery has now been solved. The acclaimed developer is working on a completely new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was showcased with a daring trailer featuring striking imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the very opening of infernal gates.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian clarified that a follow-up to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.

Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This phrasing implies that the team might be building a real-time experience as opposed to another tactical title. Currently, it remains theory, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is widely praised and arguably it pioneered the recent resurgence of complex computer role-playing games. These games are defined by intricate stories, choice-driven narratives, and complex character building—traits that subsequently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is familiar fare, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust given to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is full of unique possibilities only possible with a specific type of character with a unique decision path.

The series is also notoriously permissive, enabling players to improvise in narrative and gameplay. Virtually all objectives can be approached in multiple ways, often in lateral fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you remembered something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by teleporting a glob of lava in a unorthodox way.

The Journey Continues

It is precisely these elements that allow people to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games ever made. Now, fans can look forward to another adventure in this legendary franchise.
