The English and Welsh Placed in the Same Group for the 2027 World Cup Down Under

Rugby World Cup 2027 draw ceremony
The pool stage draw was conducted by rugby legends such as two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

The English side and their Welsh counterparts have been drawn in an identical group for the World Cup in 2027, promising a highly-anticipated early clash in the tournament Down Under. They are joined in Pool F by Tonga and Zimbabwe.

This pairing mirrors their famous clash in the pool stages of the 2015 tournament, where a Welsh win at Twickenham played a part in the English team's surprise early exit.

Key Pool Draws

The Irish and Scotland also share a group together, replicating the scenario from the France 2023 tournament. In that tournament, they claimed a convincing victory, with Scotland failing to advance to the quarter-finals.

Los Teros and Os Lobos, both impressed as surprise packages in the last World Cup, round out that Pool D.

Notably, the winners of these two groups are kept apart from holders and top-ranked the Springboks before the showpiece match, presuming the Springboks top their own group.

Tournament Ramifications

Should the groups conclude according to the current world rankings, further leading contenders like the All Blacks and France would remain separated from both England and the Irish until the final.

In that scenario, Los Pumas would be the other highly-seeded nation on that half of the knockout draw as those northern hemisphere teams.

Hosts Face Major Opener

Tournament hosts Australia have been drawn together with their great rivals and three-time winners the All Blacks in Pool A.

The Wallabies will open the tournament in Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a marquee match designed to launch the competition.

In other groups, holders the Springboks have been paired with the Azzurri, Georgia and Romania. France are in a pool with the Brave Blossoms, 2031 hosts the USA and Manu Samoa.

Expanded Tournament for 2027

Argentina will face the Flying Fijians, Spain and the Canadian team as the World Cup grows to 24 teams from the 20 who took part in 2023.

This edition will introduce a round of 16 round for the first time in the competition's history.

While the victor of Pool F may avoid some of the rugby's biggest beasts early on, they will meet the runner-up from Pool B – probably Italy – in the first knockout round.

A total of four of the other six pool winners will face a third-placed side from the initial group phase.
